Living Life Indoors. Dreaming of the Outdoors
Leave No Trace. LNT
Leave No Trace.
Leave No Trace (LNT) is a philosophy (and in certain countries around the world, law) that ensures the wilder areas we live in and walk through are kept as pristine as possible.
I’m not a survivalist nut but leaving a place as you found it is very important for me. It ensures I will be able to go back to the same place and use it again, it ensures that nature can recover quicker, it ensures that the local wildlife and flora and fauna are harmed as little as possible and preferably not at all.
It’s about looking after the planet.
- All rubbish is carried out or burnt to ash safely; where open fires are allowed.
- All human liquid (urine) is disposed of suitable, at least 200m away from water sources if possible etc
- All human solid waste is suitably buried deeply enough and far enough away from water sources/paths and human habitation. Deep enough is a minimum of 8″.
- Toilet paper is burnt where it can be or buried with the solids.
- Feminine hygiene products must be bagged and carried out. I will provide suitable bags for this. Burning is possible; however, it usually requires a fire hotter than can be provided with a usual campfire arrangement. If you use a different method then please don’t be embarrassed about discussing your concerns before we walk / camp.
Application of Common Sense
Leave No Trace, for me, stems from my time in the military. You didn’t want to get found as your life depended on it, so you literally carried it all out. Solids in tin foil and plastic bags or & liquids in water bottles.
Now it’s more about the application of common sense.
Ideally, urine should be 200m from water sources. In the UK this is hard to do, so we use common sense.
If you can’t dig a hole for solids then you bag it and carry it out etc.
Wild camping should be challenging but enjoyable.
